“Pilgrimage”, a word that invites us into a journey, resonates with images of significant places, special memories, and shared experiences.  It’s a journey that we make through life – both outwardly, through circumstances and years, and inwardly, through the landscape of our soul.  Plan to join us on our half-day retreat as we explore this theme together, sharing, as all pilgrims do: Conversation (teaching and small group reflection); Oasis Rest (time to reflect on application to your own life); Beauty (art and film); and Sustaining Food (lunch provided)!

The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude after a noon lunch.  For those who are able to stay for a theme-related movie, we’ll regroup at 12:45 p.m. to watch “The Way”, the story of a retired doctor who walks the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain, gathering traveling companions along the way.

This retreat will be led by Susan and David Currie.  The Curries hail from New England, where they serve at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.  David is the Director of the seminary’s Doctor of Ministry program.  Susan works with Master’s level students through the Pierce Center for Disciple Building and with church leaders around the country through a parachurch ministry.  In addition to their seminary ministries, Susan and David have a long history of pastoral ministry.    And if their last name sounds familiar to you, it should!  David is the son of our own Ellie Currie.

You won’t want to miss this wonderful opportunity to enrich your soul.   The retreat is for everyone, singles or couples.  And the cost is minimal:  $15/each or $25/couple at time of registration.   Register at the church office or on the “front patio” on Sundays.

The 2014 Alzheimer’s Walk is coming on October 18th

The walk originates at UMC and goes to Freedom Plaza and returns again to the church. While the Walk is fun, let’s not forget about the disease that affects so many in our area. The money we collect goes for research to slow down or maybe even end Alzheimer’s. We need walkers to sign up and get people to support them. Let’s lead the walk with our contributions. Donations of more than $50, makes you eligible for a free T-Shirt.

Remember the following dates: August 17th for signing up to walk and gather pledges. October 14th is pre-registration day at the church where you will be able to pick up your 2014 shirt. October 18th is the date of the walk and continental breakfast will be served.  Cold water will be available all morning.

Our team coordinator for this event is Shelia Thurston. Signing up on the patio will begin on August 17th. Join our Community Connections Team in making this the best year  ever. Contact Sue Montgomery for more information: 813-416-3756
