Finding Treasure

The Kingdom of God/Heaven is coming. The Kingdom is in your midst. The Kingdom is within. The Kingdom is like...... In today's Scripture, Jesus says that the Kingdom of Heaven is Like a man who found a hidden treasure and like a merchant in search of fine pearls. Have you ever run across something that is so important that you will go to any measure to attain it? Such is the case with the Kingdom.

    “Wheat or Weeds”

There are some pretty strange farming practices going on in Matthew 13. We encounter a farmer who randomly tosses seed everywhere. He appears to be extravagantly wasteful, and Jesus commends this type of farming. In today's text, Jesus tells a story about wheat and weeds growing together. Wouldn't the farmer want to remove the weeds? Jesus says the wheat and weeds grow together and they will be separated at the harvest. Obviously, Jesus is not talking about farming, but about the Kingdom. This morning, we will explore the Parable of the Wheat and Weeds.

“Good News in a Bad News World”
I know you will be blessed this morning as Pastor Sam brings the message from Matthew Chapter 9 “Good News in a Bad News World”. I flew up to Long Island, NY, early Thursday morning to spend a few days with my middle son, Cody, and will be back in the office early Tuesday morning. I took my golf clubs with me, of course! Every year I try and get away a few days with Cody. Each one of my children are very special and precious to me and I treasure these God given moments, especially when they live so far from home. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you gather for worship this morning and I will see you in church next Sunday.

    “Something for Nothing”

For the past couple of months we focused on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7. This morning we embark on a new adventure as we continue in the Gospel according to Matthew. Over the next few months, we will consider a number of stories, teachings, and parables that are recorded by Matthew. We will look closely at the Kingdom teachings of Jesus as remembered and written by Matthew. This morning is a great place to start as Jesus calls "Matthew" the tax collector to be a disciple and shares a meal with tax collectors and "sinners." Have you ever received something for nothing? That is the question we will ask ourselves this morning.

This is one of those sermons I would like to avoid. Most of us who are preachers, find that we are usually preaching to ourselves. In the context of today's text, I am especially preaching to myself. Confession is good for the soul, and if I am going to be honest, I must confess that one of the things I struggle most with is worry. Jesus specifically addresses the subject of worry in the Sermon on the Mount. Do you ever struggle with worry? Where does worry come from? Is it a sin for Christians to worry? What can we do about it? What does Jesus say to do about?

Happy Birthday church! Today is Pentecost, the day we celebrate the birth of the church as recorded in Acts 2. This is another exciting day in the life of UMCSCC. This morning we will welcome 42 more new members into our church family. We will also celebrate our graduating seniors. Following the sermon, we will gather around the table of our Lord to celebrate Holy Communion. As the Holy Spirit descended on those faithful followers in Jerusalem on Pentecost, may the Holy Spirit descend on us again today. May our prayer be the prayer of the early church. Lord, give us power and boldness!

“A Little Salt and a Little Light Make a Lot of Difference”

We usually think of Jesus being a teacher, a rabbi, a prophet and a healer. However, we usually don't think of him as a "preacher" but he obviously preached to the crowds. The success of any gifted preacher lies in the ability to use simple, ordinary illustrations and object lessons that the average person can understand and relate to. Such is the case as Jesus begins his most famous sermon by talking about something that everyone was familiar with and understood. Salt and Light. Things so common that over 2000 years later, we as disciples and followers of Jesus living in 2017 can understand and relate to. This morning Jesus reminds us that WE are SALT - WE are LIGHT!
