“I Believe in Jesus Christ His Only Son Our Lord”

Today is the celebration of Pentecost, the birthday of the church! We remember how those early followers of Jesus were gathered in Jerusalem to receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. One of the miracles of Pentecost is that all heard the message of the Good News of Jesus in their own language. Peter preached an incredible sermon and the "church" was born. This morning we will look at Peter's sermon as he proclaims Jesus - crucified and risen! We will experience Pentecost once again here in Sun City Center as we receive new members into our church family and our 2018 Confirmation Class will be confirmed in their faith at the 11am service! It is going to be a great "birthday" celebration!

“I Believe in God the Father Almighty”

As we begin to work our way through these powerful statements of the Apostles Creed, we see that the creed begins with "I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth." Today, we will talk about our understanding of God as Almighty - the one who CREATED. Genesis tells us that God "spoke" creation into being.  We must begin by acknowledging that truly understanding God is far beyond what our human minds are capable of fathoming. As human beings, we have given "attributes" to God to help aid us in our understandings. Often, God Almighty, the God of the Old Testament is understood as being impersonal. However, we will discover this morning that God has always sought a personal, intimate relationship with his children.

It is also on this day that we recognize the special women in our life we call our mothers. On this Mother's Day, we give thanks to God for our mothers and we honor all of the women of our congregation.

    “I Believe”

This morning we begin a brand new sermon series entitled "What We Believe" based on the words of the Apostle's Creed. Over the next six weeks we will examine the incredible and powerful words of this ancient Creed. We will begin to understand how this simple statement of faith has enlightened and empowered generations of Christ's followers. The Apostle's Creed begins with the words, "I Believe." Everyone believes in something. So, what does it mean when we say, "I Believe?" When we say the words of the Apostle's Creed, we declare who God is! Let us consider what we truly Believe.

    “Running the Desert Road”

Last week Pastor Sam taught us what to do when we do not know what to do--we love, honor, and cherish each other. This week we are learning from Philip the Evangelist about what to do when we know what we are supposed to do—but we do not want to do it. Come celebrate the powerful love of God as the Holy Spirit prepares, prompts, and propels us in mission to the world as we join Philip in Running the Desert Road.

    “Breakfast at the Beach”

It’s now been three weeks since Good Friday, the cross, and the resurrection appearances of Easter morning.  For the disciples of Jesus, the reality of just how much their world had changed was finally hitting home.  For three years, they had spent nearly every day with Jesus sharing in His ministry.  Now, their world was totally different and they were not quite sure what to do next.  So…. they returned to doing what they knew best; fishing. It was there in the very familiar places of life that they encountered the Risen Christ once again.  This Sunday, the sermon message will focus on the tough question of ‘what to do, when you do not know what to do.’  The Gospel account of the breakfast shared on the beach by  Jesus and His disciples provides valuable insights into how we can respond to those difficult times in our lives when we are uncertain ‘of what we are to do next.’

    “Unsinkable”

In light of Easter and for the past two Sundays we’ve read John's account of Jesus’s Resurrection. Today, we look at the Book of 1st John for a traditional post-Easter reading. This book was written late in his life and is located towards the end of the New Testament and just before the Book of Revelation; which was also written by John! Did you know that today marks the 106th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic -- “The Unsinkable Ship.” Even beyond a century of the disaster’s occurrence, people continue to be intrigued. What Easter lesson does 1st John have for us and what can we learn this morning from the sinking of an unsinkable ship?

    “Hands of Love”

What an incredible Easter Sunday last week. My thanks to everyone who make Easter so special at UMCSCC. The resurrection of Jesus changes everything. This morning, Easter continues as we move forth in the power and presence of the Risen Christ. Today is the "series finale"  in the Sermon Series, God's Hands, Our Hands, and the Hands of Jesus." In today's text, Jesus reveals himself to the disciples on the shores of the Sea of Galilee and feeds them a fish breakfast. He then proceeds to ask Peter, (three times) if Peter loves him. It becomes obvious that Jesus is extending his loving and forgiving hands to Peter, who had denied Jesus three times. It is those same loving hands that are extended to us today as we reflect on these questions of love. How can you and I exemplify love to our Risen Lord?

    “Hands of Life”

Throughout the Lenten Season, we have focused on God's Hands, Our Hands, and the Hands of Jesus. Over the past couple of months we have talked about Dirty Hands/Clean Hands, Hands of Prayer, Healing, Compassion, Anger and Fear. On this most important day of our Christian Faith, Easter Sunday - The Day of Resurrection, we will talk about the Hands of Life. On Easter, Christ conquered death and the grave! The tomb is empty. Christ is Risen. When he appeared to his disciples, he showed them his nail-scarred, living hands. Jesus, who rose from the grave on that Easter Sunday 2000 years ago, extends his Hands of Life bringing us life now and life everlasting! May the Risen Christ fill you with his power and presence on this Easter Sunday. Happy Easter!

    Messiah Easter Cantata

Palm branches waving, shouts of loud “Hosannas”; Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the Highest! Today is the beginning of Holy Week. Do not be seduced by the palms. While today is a day of recognizing Jesus as the long awaited Messiah and King, we remember that before the week was over, Jesus had been betrayed, denied, arrested, tried and crucified. Let us join in waving our palm branches this morning. Let us be blessed by the Cantata presented by the Chancel Choir in the Traditional Services and by Pastor Ryan's message in the Contemporary Services. And let us continue to journey with Jesus throughout this week of passion, pain and suffering. May today and the events (and special services) of this week truly prepare us for Easter.
