“The Cost of Renovation”

Last week, we began this new Sermon Series - Fixer Upper - Let God Renovate. We know that God is in the "renovation" business and Jesus specializes in Fixer Uppers! And we acknowledge that our "spiritual houses" can use some repair and every one of us is in need of renovation. Last week we talked about the importance of a strong foundation. This week we will talk about the COST of renovation. Renovation requires an investment on our part. Are we willing to make that investment? God is the architect who has a plan for our lives. The Holy Spirit has the blueprints. We can be assured that Jesus has already made the investment.

    “The Foundation”

I wonder how many of you watch HGTV and are familiar with the show Fixer Upper? My wife Marcia and my daughter, Alaina, LOVE the show and watch episode after episode. In the show, Chip and Joanna Gaines of Waco, Texas find homes that are in great need of repair and "fix them up" into something of beauty. It dawns on me that God is in the Fixer Upper business. As human beings, we are continually in need of renovation. Jesus is the ultimate renovator. Over the next 6 weeks, we will talk about how we, as Christ Followers, go through the renovation process.

    “Standing Secure”

This morning Pastor Ryan will be bringing the message. You may have seen him in his role as "Jim" at VBS this past week! We are blessed that Pastor Ryan was re-appointed to UMCSCC and next Sunday begins a new "conference" year. You may have heard the rumors that we are planning on starting Saturday afternoon worship services this coming September. The rumors are TRUE! Beginning on September 8th we will offer a Traditional Worship service at 4:00 pm and a Contemporary worship service at 5:30 pm. Pastor Ryan will be the lead preacher for these new services! Please join us in prayer as we continue to make plans to offer this new worship experience!

“I Believe in the Resurrection of the Body and the Life Everlasting”

This morning, we come to the final two statements in the Apostles' Creed. Eventually, every person who is alive will die. Death is the one shared experience of all human beings. Most everyone thinks about their own mortality and we wonder about what is beyond this life. In reality, how we view and understand death determines how we face live and how we live. The Apostle Paul address death and resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15. We believe in life beyond death because Jesus rose from the dead. This morning we will reflect on how these last two statements of the Apostles' Creed give us the eternal hope of life NOW and LIFE FOREVER!

“I Believe in the Forgiveness of Sins”

There is a small letter (the shortest of Paul's Epistles) of the Apostle Paul tucked away in the New Testament written to Philemon. This is the only personal letter we have from Paul. Paul wrote this letter during his first Roman imprisonment around 61AD in an effort to bring about genuine Christian reconciliation between Philemon and his runaway slave, Onesimus. Paul interceded for Onesimus and expressed confidence that Philemon's faith and love in Christ would bring about forgiveness. What we discover in this text is a Forgiveness that allows Forgiveness. As we move toward the last few lines in the Apostles' Creed, the importance of Forgiveness jumps out at us! This morning, may we discover and re-discover Forgiveness that allows Forgiveness.

“I Believe in the Holy catholic church, the communion of Saints”

As we continue to work our way through the historic Apostles' Creed, this morning we will look at the words "I Believe in the holy catholic church, the communion of saints." The word "catholic” does not refer to the Roman Catholic church, but instead to the 'whole' or the 'global' Christian church. In other words, we are linked with Christ followers in churches across the entire world. The communion of the saints reminds us that we are linked with Christ followers who lived this faith before us and who are part of that "great cloud of witnesses" who cheer us on!  This morning we will be reminded that we are part of the church which is the bride of Christ and the body of Christ! As part of His body we will gather as his people this morning around the table He has prepared and receive the gifts of the Bread and the Cup.

“I Believe in the Holy Spirit”

What an incredible Pentecost celebration we had last Sunday with new members joining and the Confirmation of 23 young people at the 11:00am service! I had a number of people say to me that last Sunday was truly one of the greatest days in the life of UMCSCC. I know it was one of the highlights of my ministry! This morning we continue working our way through the Apostles' Creed as we look at the statement "I Believe in the Holy Spirit." It is God's Holy Spirit that lives in us to give us the power and presence of the risen and living Christ. May God continue to pour out the Holy Spirit on us gathered here as his people at UMCSCC.
