Biblical Encounter Notes

July 24 & 25, 2010
Surviving Life’s Storms
Psalm 27:1-6

  • Horatio Spafford’s life was so close to that of Job in the Bible. He had lost a son and investments.
  • A vacation becomes a tragedy as four daughters drown.
  • David is remembered as a great king. He had a lot of tragedy in his life. His power, wealth, etc. could not save his son.
  • Life is not fair. Life is difficult and painful.
  • We must not allow the storms of life to drown us but rise us above the storm waters.
  • Wrote the hymn at the location his daughters drowned.
  • Hymn
    • Vs. 1 It is well with his soul in good times and bad times
    • Vs. 2 My own suffering can never be as great as Jesus’ suffering for me.
    • Vs. 3 The sins that caused the suffering is washed away by Jesus
Vs. 4 There will be a day without storms. It has been promised.
  • There is no invisible shield.
  • Our faith will make life more difficult.
  • Jesus can rescue us from any storm just like he rescued the disciples and Peter on the Sea of Galilee.
  • Find the faith that conquers instead of being conquered – find your love relationship with Jesus.
  • Friendships are based on:
    • Talking with one another – prayer
    • Spending time together – worship
    • Being part of Jesus’ family – membership
  • We have to prepare our homes before the storm comes.
    • We must build our relationship with Jesus before life’s storms.
  • It is human sin and not God that creates most of life’s storms.
  • So many have joined David and Horatio at the graves of those they loved.
  • There is still the promise.
